The NIH Just-In-Time checklist.

JIT is NIH's post-review request for updated information when your score is likely to fund. It is not a funding notice — but if you're inside the payline, or your PO gives you a heads-up, JIT typically arrives fast, with a short turnaround. Having these items ready in advance is the difference between a calm week and a fire drill.

— READ THIS FIRST

A JIT request does not guarantee funding. It's triggered when your percentile/score is near or within the payline, or via an automated eRA Commons JIT link. Turnaround is typically days to about two weeks. Institutional signing officials (AORs) submit JIT through eRA Commons — start the internal routing early.

READINESS

— PERSONNEL

Other Support — all senior/key personnel
Requested for every JIT.
Active and pending support for every senior/key person named on the application, in the current NIH format. Include in-kind support, foreign components, and any consulting/advisory arrangements. Each Other Support document must be a signed PDF with the electronic signature of the PD/PI (or the individual whose support is being reported).
Updated biosketches (if changed since submission)
As requested.
If any senior/key person's role, appointment, or funding has materially changed since submission, prepare updated biosketches ready to send.

— HUMAN SUBJECTS & ANIMALS

IRB approval date (human subjects)
Any human-subjects research.
The date of IRB approval or the date the study was determined exempt. If IRB review is still in progress, NIH will accept a 'pending' response with the expected date — but pending status can delay award.
IACUC approval date (vertebrate animals)
Any vertebrate animal work.
Date of IACUC approval for the vertebrate animal work described in the Vertebrate Animals section. Verify PHS Assurance number is on file with OLAW.
Certification of Human Subjects Protection training
Any human-subjects research.
Certification that all personnel involved in the design and conduct of human-subjects research have completed education on the protection of human subjects.

— BUDGET & COMPLIANCE

Updated budget (if requested)
When the IC requests it.
If the IC asks for a revised budget, provide a detailed budget reflecting any changes in scope, personnel effort, or costs. Modular budgets rarely require this; detailed budgets often do.
Institutional compliance certifications
As requested by the IC.
Some ICs request a certification confirming the applicant institution's compliance with federal financial-conflict-of-interest, research-misconduct, and applicable civil-rights regulations.
Genomic Data Sharing plan / IBC (if applicable)
Genomic or rDNA work.
If your work generates large-scale human or non-human genomic data, or involves recombinant DNA, expect JIT to touch the Genomic Data Sharing plan and/or IBC approval.

— OTHER SUPPORT: HIGH-SCRUTINY AREA

Recent NIH policy (NOT-OD-19-114 and NOT-OD-21-073) tightened Other Support disclosures materially. Failing to report in-kind resources, foreign components, or affiliations is a common cause of award delay and, in serious cases, findings of research misconduct. Each Other Support document must now be a signed PDF with the electronic signature of the individual whose support is being reported.
